Abstract

Meditation fulfils many purposes. Some people meditate for health reasons, some for gaining greater concentration to improve their performance in their fields like arts or sports. Some meditate specifically for overcoming character defects and developing their personalities. Some meditate simply to become calm and peaceful. Whatever the apparent reasons, the underlying purpose is spiritual. The spiritual purpose Meditation restores spiritual self-awareness and power to the human soul. Every soul to a greater or lesser extent is spiritually depleted at this time. Loss of spiritual energy and purity has caused character defects, damage to the moral consciousness and a crisis in values. The discipline of meditation trains the mind to become stable and elevated. Then the soul can soar to the higher spiritual dimension and enjoy the bliss of communion with God, the Supreme divine being and restore the virtues, powers, qualities and wisdom that have been eroded over time. Character development From a spiritual perspective we can see that all human problems political, economical, social, health, educational, cultural, psychological, etc are rooted from character defects. Character defects arise from spiritual depletion and spiritual depletion originates from the separation of the true self and God. It is also due to the effect of time passing. When a person meditates he is restoring contact with the true of inner self and the awareness of the self as a soul. Meditation is also the means to restore contact with the Supreme Soul, source of all spiritual powers and qualities. As you meditate the soul dives in divine power which is rejuvenating and brings back all your lost qualities and inner powers. Your mind becomes clear and strong, able to think logically and consistently and the gap between your thoughts and actions is narrowed. Your understanding and judgment become clear and precise. You stop the habit of acting against your better judgment and gain greater honesty. The quality of your action progressively corresponds to the original virtues and qualities of the soul. This lays down new sanskaras of integrity and purity. Your character gradually changes and you develop greater discretion and generosity. It is a spiritual law that the practice of meditation is essential to engender real and lasting development of character. Health benefits Meditation is said to extend your lifespan, according to ancient wisdom. It is also said that your mind can be your greatest friend or your worst enemy because everything depends on the quality of your thoughts. Medical researches conducted by Ken Pelletier of the USA, and others have shown unequivocally that almost all disease including cancer, heart disease etc, are psychosomatic. That means they occur largely as a result of our thinking which in turn affects our lifestyle. Hereditary accounts for a predisposition to certain physical problems but even so your thinking has a significant influence on how you deal with congenital weakness. Negative thoughts create tension, anxiety and antagonism and have a very harmful effect on the body, inhibiting the immune system and your ability to regenerate cells. Waste thoughts have a tendency to escalate into obsessive, compulsive thinking which degenerates into negative thoughts. All sort of addictions begin with this problem. Through your meditation practice, you develop the power to notice when the mind has wandered onto the track of waste or negative thinking. You can prevent yourself from going along that track with a single powerful thought and re-set the mind along a positive track. Regular meditation enables you to re-set your attitude towards yourself as a pure and peaceful soul. You generate inner serenity and silence through meditation which affects your physical body. You relieve stress in this way and spread vibrations of tranquility throughout your physical system, helping it to rebuild itself and allowing involuntary functions to take place with the least resistance. Meditation also helps you to resolve any outstanding debt from past negative action (karmic account) which would otherwise manifest as physical illness or a shortened life span. The overall effect creates ideal conditions for a healthy body and an extended lifespan.
