Abstract

Addiction is a challenging social problem which has engulfed the youth in particular. However, it has percolated from the elderly men and women. Any behavior that is used to manage feelings and which is continued in spite of adverse consequences is an addiction. Factors contributing to addictions Genetic Familial Social Medical Economic Peer pressures Some addictions require complete abstinence and some have to be managed. Addictions at early stage, called substance abuse. Substance abuse Psychoactive substances are as follows, Alcohol Nicotine - Tobacco (Cigarette, Gutkha, Gudakhu, Pan Masala etc) Gudakhu is a paste used for clearing tooth & gum. Narcotics - Heroin, Cocaine, Cannabis, Opium Drugs - Codeine, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like nimesulide, ibuprofen, narcotic and mood elevator drugs Chemicals - Quick fix, Dendrite etc. Rising levels of above among young people and college students are a matter of concern for social thinkers. Addiction is a progressive disease. In the early stages it is undetectable, but as it progresses it diminishes an individual's control over his life and in spite of the negative consequences, he is unable to stop. This is passed down through the generations and the cycle of addiction intensifies. To become free from addiction, a dependent person requires - Medical therapy Psychological therapy Spiritual empowerment
